Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful tool for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social sassy and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the garbage from one of the juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the public relations industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in a small production studio right out of school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
